Brennan Vineyards; ready for harvest and ready for the world!

https://www.facebook.com/86571820665/photos/a.10150716094025666.390579.86571820665/10152127319200666/?type=1&theater
Our cultural buzz seems to be focused on the big cities and the hope that there is some kind of bight future in the urban centers.  However, it is in Comanche Texas, that the past and future are entwined very tangibly and you can feel an synergy where creation and innovation is happening.  I love to visit the area, my Mom's side of the family is from here, it is a great part of Texas.  This is a very rural part of the state with many farms and ranches, where many people work long and hard to put food on our tables.  Then there are the many wind turbines across the region spinning and generating clean electricity.  They are connected to the world via the internet and yet you can drive a few miles further and loose your cell phone signal.  The local realtor advertises 40k starter homes along side the 400k sprawling estates.  Here the present is the past existing side by side with the future with no pretense or conceit.  And, you can see and taste all this at Brennan Vineyards.

On the south side of Comanche, across the railroad tracks, in an area somewhat industrial, somewhat run down and somewhat new, being developed, and vibrant; you will find Brennan's winery with the estate vineyards next door.  It looks and feels like an oasis with giant trees, lush landscaping and sprawling vineyards.  The tasting room is in the historic McCrary House with the state of the art winery a few yards away.  I was treated to a tour and tasting with the wineries talented Sommelier and Director of Marketing, Rebecca Conley.  It was obvious and mentioned that they were gearing up for harvest, their busiest and most stress filled and long hard days that any wineries experiences.  As impressive as the facility is, it is the quality of the wines in the glass that blew me away!  The entire line up of wines is very impressive, expertly crafted and honest wines, tip of the hat to winemaker Tim Webster, great guy, very humble for the talent he demonstrates, he is worth meeting if you get the opportunity.

Highlights from my tasting; while renowned for their Viognier, they are offering a 2014 Reserve Viognier for the first time in a decade!  It is amazing with a classic rich and lush mouthfeel delivering apple, pear and lemon fruit with some subtle stonefruit and long complex finish.  This is a classic and elegant expression of Viognier that should be served throughout the world.

Two of my favorites were from their 4.0 Cellars line; the 2012 Syrah which showed big juicy flavors of black cherry with hints of anise and black pepper, luscious wine. And, the 2012 Mourvedre which has a fascinating aroma of french onion and cherries with awesome juicy flavors of vanilla and cherry and that toe curling velvety finish.

We all love the superheros and quite cleverly they have named their wine made from Nero d'Avola grapes; "Super Nero!"  The 2012  is super smoky on the nose with enticing hints of black fruit. The flavors are complex with a bite of tar up front, big juicy and meaty fruit flavors like plum and wild berries, a touch of coco and more as the finish goes to infinity and beyond!

Yet, there is no denying the super star of the line up is the winemakers choice simply titled "W."  This is a beguiling multi vintage and multi grape blend.  It has the smoky and tar aromas on the nose with the big, rich and lush flavors aggressive on the palate.  Black berry and black cherry fruit combines vanilla and licorice to make a complex and long finish that is outstanding for red wines from the best wineries in the world.  I plan for  some friends to taste this wine blind against some expensive Napa red blends.  My money is on the "W."

Brennan Vineyards is wonderful place, you simply must go, see and taste for yourself.  You will be in Comanche and there is a lot to see and appreciate; look beyond the past, anticipate the future in the wind and realize that it is all bottled up in 750ml bottles of wine for you to enjoy today and tomorrow!

Texas Wine Month- Plant! Baby, plant!!!

Welcome to Texas Wine Month!  The most important thing for you to know about the Texas Wine Country is that there is a shortage of grape vines growing in Texas soil.  Texas needs more grape vines!  We have many great grape growers working hard and supplying great raw materials for the talented winemakers.  I want to encourage them and thank them for hard work they are doing.  Working outdoors in Texas is not easy, the heat alone keeps many indoors.  Add to this the other weather challenges, the pests, wild life and more.  I admire you strength, determination and true grit to do the work it takes to grow vines here in Texas.  You are doing a great job!  We are tasting better wines every vintage.

The simple math is that today we may have five thousand acres under vine and the current estimate on demand is that the wineries can sell as much wine that would come from eighteen to twenty thousand acres of vines!  Even if these numbers are a little high you can see there is still a great need for more grape vines growing in Texas soil.  So, this Texas Wine Month I call you to drink more Texas wine, visit Texas wineries, thank the wineries for the wine they make, thank the growers for the grapes they grow AND encourage all of them to plant more vines in Texas.  Plant baby! Plant!!!

Digital Wine List...

Earlier this year I had a brush with the potential of having a digital wine list for our guests and the concept has captured my imagination!

Truth be told; today all wine list are digital. Sommeliers are using some form of computer program to log, arrange and track the wines in their charge. There is a divide or canyon between the printed list the guest uses to select wine from and the digital one the sommelier uses. The good news is that this divide is closing; we are beginning to see distal list in the hands of customers. This can take the form of a Ipad or other tablet to other electronic devices. This is one of the challenges; the cost of the hardware is significant. While thinking about this dynamic and watching our customers in the resort; I realize that the vast majority of our customers are already "packing" their own hardware. So then, why wouldn't our guest want to access our digital wine list with their own device? This is how and why I have added the wine list page to my blog page. Please; click on the link below and give me your feedback.  Do you find this list helpful?  How can it be better?

Chardonnay, Rombauer, Carneros, Napa Valley, California

The Joy of Wine is written on every cork, it is their philosophy of wine and food.  Partly an homage to Koerner Rombauer's great aunt, Irma Rombauer, who wrote the now classic book; The Joy of Cooking, and partly Koerner's ancestors from the wine growing region of Reingau, Germany, where wine is considered an essential complement to a meal.  For the Rombauer Vinyards; The Joy of Wine is a family tradition.

Just north of San Francisco is the cold San Pablo Bay famous for it's cold winds and thick fog.  On the north coast of San Pablo Bay is the appellation known as Los Carneros, Spanish for The Rams.  During the day, as the sun heats up the vineyards and mountainsides of Napa Valley to the north, the rising hot air draws cool air and fog from San Pablo Bay. The intrusion of fog over Carneros in the early afternoon moderates the vineyard temperatures, providing just the right conditions for growing cool-climate varietals with crisp acidity and moderate sugar levels. One of the best regions for growing Chardonnay.

Chardonnay, MAGNOLIA GROVE, by Chateau St. Jean, California

Magnolia Grove Chardonnay's label evokes a relaxed elegance that is synonymous with the Sonoma County lifestyle and feeling one will experience when traveling and staying in a Starwood Hotels.  This wine was created for Starwood Hotels by Chateau St. Jean to meet the expectations of their consumers who are knowledgeable, yet unpretentious about their wine selections.

  • SUPPLE
  • Pineapple
  • Ripe Peach
  • Lemon Zest
  • Vanilla
  • Oak

Innovative techniques for wood aging are used; toasting the oak at lower temperatures for longer period of time. This "lower and slower" process brings out more sweetness and vanilla in the wine than traditional methods, making the flavors in this wine comparable to Chardonnays that sell for twice the price.  Grapes are sourced primarily from vineyards in the Central Coast and the Northern Interior of California.  Fermented in stainless steel tanks with a portion in French and American oak, the majority of the fruit goes through malolactic fermentation, lending richness and creamy mouthfeel.  Excellent results from a great partnership.

Tour de France: What is in a name; Francesca's?

WAY back in the summer of 1999 we sat around the Boardroom Table in the The Grille at the The Resort Course of The Westin La Cantera Hill Country Resort.  The Resort was sparkling new, just opened, and our fine dinning restaurant had yet to open.  Around the table were Westin executives, the Matre 'd, servers and our consulting Chef Mark Miller.  Yes, THE Mark Miller of Coyote Cafe fame.  I was one of the servers.  The hot topic was how are we going to pronounce the name of our restaurant.

We all agreed that it sounded best as "Fran-CHESS-kas."  It is just how most of us said it.  Then Chef Miller gave us a lesson in European pronunciations; the "Fran-CHESS-kas" we were saying was Italian and we wanted to stay away from being an Italian restaurant.  Since we have more Spanish influence in our cuisine, culture, and region he maintained that we should use the Spanish pronunciation .."Fran-ses-kas."  From there on we agreed, the Spanish pronunciation was the way to go.

Nowhere in all our discussion do I remember us talking about what the name meant. We all got that it was a girl's name, which is obvious, the legend that our name is honoring was the prettiest lady in the county who stole the heart of a young man that was destined to become a priest.

What I did not catch is that it was acknowledgment of France or French heritage which was itself a reference to freedom or "free one!"

Many will agree that this French Spirit of freedom is vibrantly on display in the feats of the month long race that tours the country, called the Tour de France.

AND it can be tasted in the wines made from their land!  Which is why our wine list is featuring French wines during July.  Check out this wine list here.

This part of Texas has rolling hills with red sandy loam soil over limestone bedrock, prized conditions for growing grapes for wine making.  For a fun take on how Viognier is the "Chardonnay" of Texas follow this link to the Vintage Texas Blog.

"One of the best Viogniers made in America, so it's worth the search. Gorgeous white peach and floral scents and tangerine-mango flavors," Andrea said.  And when reviewed by Wine Spectator Magazine, Matthew DeBord said;"Bunny and Richard Becker have raised the bar in Texas by producing wines that have achieved regional character."

Blanc Du Bois originated from the grape breeding program at the Central Florida Research and Education Center.   Haak Vineyards was one of the first wineries in the country to cultivate Blanc du Bois. Artwork throughout the winery is reminiscent of Italy, Greece, Spain and Portugal with many angels watching over and protecting the vines and grapes.

White Zinfandel, BERINGER, California

Beringer’s California Collection boasts some of the best-selling wines in the country. Fruit-forward and smooth, these wines offer dependable taste for casual drinkers.  Beringer White Zinfandel is known as “America’s favorite White Zinfandel” and to appreciate what that means understand that Sutter Home says: "One out of every ten bottles of table wine opened in America is white zinfandel."  This is a VERY popular wine category.

The grapes selected for Beringer's California Collection wines are from prime locations bathed in warm sunshine the majority of the day, to yield the most ripe, sun-kissed fruit flavors in the grapes.  By keeping the juice in contact with the grapes’ red skins for approximately three hours (a very short time,) a light blush color was retained. Beringer’s winemakers then used slow, cool fermentations to preserve the vibrant, fresh strawberry, honeydew, and citrus aromas and flavors.

Fruit for this wine was sourced from vineyards across the Marlborough region. A blend of fruit grown in the Wairau and Awatere Valleys spanning a range of different meso-climates were incorporated. He harvested his first grapes in 1962 and made his first wine under the name Villa Maria.  Throughout the 1960s Villa Maria was a one-man band, with George’s wife, Gail, supporting him in his venture. He made dry red and white wines, sourcing grapes from the greater Auckland regions. In the early 1970s he started to employ staff and the company began to expand rapidly.  Today, Villa Maria employs more than 250 permanent staff and exports wine to over 50 countries worldwide.

Sauvignon Blanc, CLOUDY BAY, Marlborough, New Zealand

The winery takes its name from the bay at the eastern extremity of the Wairau Valley, which was named Cloudy Bay by Captain Cook on his voyage to New Zealand in 1770.  It was not until two-hundred and fifteen years later that the first vintage of Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc was made.  And, it made New Zealand famous for Sauvignon Blanc and helped every other winery on the island become noticed by the world of thirsty wine drinkers.
  • DISTINCTIVE
  • Elderflower
  • Stone Fruit
  • Ripe Citrus
  • Minerality
  • Sweet Herbs
Grapes are from the Rapaura, Fairhall, Renwick and Brancott sub-regions of the Wairau Valley. Free draining, stony soils typify the Rapaura and Renwick areas. The Fairhall and Brancott are predominantly aged alluvial loams containing some clay.  This is a great wine that proves itself again, and again... 96 Points: Gourmet Traveler Wine, March 2013
“After all these years, Cloudy Bay has still got it. It’s encouraging to know that the brand is not merely resting on its laurels. Beautifully harmonious Sauvignon Blanc with a mix of grapefruit, gooseberry and capsicum contrasting with riper tropical and tree fruit characters while the acidity and sweetness are perfectly balanced. The net effect is of an elegant and moderately complex wine that delivers power with great subtlety.” - Bob Campbell MW

With the peaks of the mountains reaching up to 14,000 feet high, blocking almost all the eastward-moving wet weather systems from the Pacific Ocean.  Vines are planted north to south on south and southeast facing slopes to catch the sunshine in the summertime.  With just 6 to 8 inches of rainfall annually, the vineyards are 100% drip irrigation.  With intense sun during the growing season and bitterly cold weather before and after; this is a prime region for Riesling.

Variety the Spice of Life; Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc is always light to medium body and it can be fruity and/or herbaceous, it can be oak aged or not.  No matter where it is grown and what the wine maker may do to it; Sauvignon Blanc will always be DISTINCTIVE. This grape can be pretty wild in it's flavor expression and makes some of the most exciting and entertaining wines!

Flavors Commonly Experienced :
  • Herbal
  • Grassy
  • Grapefruit
  • Lemon / Lime
  • Fig
  • Hay
  • Vanilla  Oak / Butter
Sauvignon Blanc is native to France and most likely to the Loire Valley or Bordeaux.   The vine most likely gets its name from the French word sauvage "wild" and blanc "white."  The vine itself has a fairly wild personality, it grows with abandon if not trellised and pruned diligently. Classic Sauvignon Blanc is from Bordeaux, labeled as Bordeaux Blanc and Graves AOCs, customarily blended with SĂ©millon and Muscadelle to add friendly fruit flavors, and sometimes treated to oak aging. In the Loire Valley of France it makes wine that is flinty with pronounced mineral flavors. Sauvignon Blanc from California is bright, grassy and grapefruity. And, the best ones come from New Zealand where the long slow growing season helps the wine become vibrant, high acid, pungent and fruity wine.

Before Chardonnay became in vogue Riesling was considered the greatest white wine in the world.  Riesslingen as the name of a grape first appeared in records in 1435 in the Rhine Valley, a wild vine domesticated during the Middle Ages.  Almost seven hundred years later some of the most incredible white wines you will ever taste are being made in he Rhine and Mosel Valleys of Germany.  Riesling grapes are successfully grown in Alsace France, northern Italy, Austria, Washington state, Canada and a few other locations with cool to cold weather during the growing season.
